Nitrous Oxide
A mild sedative breathed through a small mask, for patients who find dental visits stressful.
Some people are fine in the chair. Some are not, and putting off treatment because of it only makes the eventual visit harder. Nitrous oxide takes the edge off without putting you to sleep.
If nerves have kept you away from the dentist, say so when you book. It changes how we plan the visit.
What to expect
- A soft mask over the nose; you breathe normally.
- A relaxed, slightly floaty feeling within a few minutes. You stay awake and can talk.
- The effect wears off within minutes of the mask coming off.
Cost and insurance
Nitrous oxide is sometimes covered and sometimes not. We will tell you the position before your appointment.
Common questions
Is it safe?
Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over a century and is among the mildest sedation options. We check your medical history first.
Can I drive afterward?
Yes. Unlike other sedatives it clears the body within minutes, so you can leave as you normally would.
